The Facebook-based competition began Aug. 12 and will end the night before College Colors Day on Friday, Aug. 30. To participate, users simply need to pledge support for their institution online at http://tx.ag/SpiritCup2013. Facebook users are able to pledge one time per day.
The Spirit Cup competition is an element of this year’s College Colors Day — an annual event that encourages people across the country to wear the colors of their favorite college or university to promote the college experience. The competing university with the most pledges in the Spirit Cup will be announced Aug. 30 and will be awarded $10,000 that will be added toward the school’s general scholarship fund.
Aggies everywhere are encouraged to don their maroon and white on Aug. 30. Fans can also share their spirit on social media during College Colors Day by posting and tweeting photos of themselves wearing their maroon and white using #CollegeColors.
“College Colors Day is a chance for Aggies to visibly exhibit the Aggie Spirit,” said Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin. “In addition to pledging your support for Texas A&M in the Spirit Cup, we also want Aggies to wear their favorite maroon shirt, polo, hat or bowtie to join in this celebration of spirit.”
College Colors Day will be celebrated in advance of Texas A&M’s season-opening home football against Rice University at noon on Saturday, Aug. 31.
“I know the 12th Man will stand up and represent Texas A&M in ‘Aggie Maroon’ for College Colors Day and for our season-opener against Rice the following day,” said Head Football Coach Kevin Sumlin. “We hope that Aggies will wear maroon each and every Friday in support of our team this fall.”
Initiated by The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), a division of IMG College, and NCAA Football, College Colors Day serves as a way to increase public awareness about the achievements and contributions of higher education. Hundreds of colleges and universities across the nation participate each year.
“Aggies are recognized around the world for the great traditions and pride we carry for Texas A&M,” said Shane Hinckley, the university’s interim vice president for marketing and communications. “We know that Aggies are going to ‘maroon out’ their classrooms, offices and communities and visually show their Aggie pride on College Colors Day.”
