Former Regent Selected As Campus Muster Speaker

Bill Jones '81

Bill Jones, a 1981 Texas A&M graduate and chairman emeritus of The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, will be the speaker at his alma mater’s annual April 21 campus Muster, a ceremony that annually honors the memory of Texas A&M  students who died during the previous year.

Campus Muster, which is student-led, traditionally packs the 12,500-seat Reed Arena and is the largest of the more than 300 Muster ceremonies held throughout Texas and elsewhere in the nation, as well as numerous abroad, including several in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Jones, founder and principal of The Jones Firm, a public law and government relations firm in Austin and co-managing founder of AFCI Texas, LLC, a used nuclear fuel storage start-up, served on The Texas A&M System Board of Regents from 2003 to 2011 and was chairman of the board from 2007 to 2009.

Earlier in his career, Jones served as a partner with Vinson & Elkins, L.L.P. practicing in public law. He also served as general counsel to Gov. Rick Perry from December 2000 to November 2003.

Jones has long been active in service to Texas A&M and honored for his accomplishments. He was named the 2010 Texas Aggie Bar Association Lawyer of the Year and served on the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets Development Council Advisory Panel.

He also has been active in service to the state. He currently serves as a member of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Commission and is a member of the executive board of the Austin Chamber of Commerce. He was selected as one of the “2011-2012 Best Lawyers in America” by U.S. News & World Report. He previously served as president of the Texas Young Lawyers Association (1996-97), and also served on the State Bar of Texas Board of Directors Executive Committee (1995-98). In 1997, he was appointed by then Gov. George W. Bush to the Board of the Texas Department of Human Services.

Muster candles

Candles are lit in honor of Aggies who have died in the past year.

At each Muster ceremony around the world, the speaker will be followed by the “Roll Call For The Absent” which is a reading of the names of those from that area who have died in the past year, along with those of other classmates or friends, as requested. As each name is called, a family member or friend will answer “Here,” and a candle will be lit.

Following the candle-lighting ceremony in Reed Arena, the Ross Volunteer Company, which serves as the honor guard for the governor of Texas, will march in to fire a rifle volley followed by a special arrangement of “Taps.”

  1. I could not think of a better person to speak at Muster than Bill Jones. I knew him well as a student at Texas A&M. He was a great guy then who has gone on to accomplish much as we all knew he would. He is today and always has been a great ambassador for Texas A&M and for Aggies everywhere.
