Texas A&M Moves Into Top 20 Among Public Universities In New Rankings

Texas A&M University vaulted into the nation’s top 20 public universities — tied for 19th — in the 2012 rankings by U.S. News & World Report and maintained its second-place public university ranking in the magazine’s “Great Schools, Great Prices” category.

The U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges 2012 rankings were released today (Tuesday) in advance of the magazine’s Best  Colleges guidebook that is scheduled to be on newsstands Sept.20,  according to an announcement by the publication’s editors.

As in previous years, the publication’s “national universities” rankings are dominated by private universities. Texas A&M is tied with three other public universities for 19th among publics — sharing that distinction with the Universities of Florida, Connecticut and Pittsburgh — which is three places higher than last year. Texas A&M is tied with those same institutions for 58th overall — which is five places higher for Texas A&M than last year.  The University of California at Berkeley is the top-ranked public university, with an overall ranking of 21st.

Texas A&M is the only public university in Texas to be included in the “Great Schools, Great Prices” category. The only public university to rank higher is the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin said he was “pleased to see Texas A&M advance in the rankings and break into the top 20 among the nation’s public universities, while maintaining our lofty status of balancing value and quality of education.”

“There are obviously many measures of what constitutes a great university, but we are delighted that the editors of U.S. News & World Report acknowledge that Texas A&M continues to stand out as an institution that is among the very best nationally for offering high-quality education at an affordable cost.  We are committed to reaching the goals set forth in Vision 2020 as we continue to strengthen and enhance our high academic standards and work to be recognized as one of the top 10 public universities in the country,” Loftin said.

Texas A&M’s Dwight Look College of Engineering maintained its ninth-place ranking among engineering programs at national public universities. It is again tied with Penn State.

The U.S. News & World Report rankings are the latest results showing that Texas A&M is continuing to attract positive attention at the national level.

Earlier this month, Washington Monthly ranked Texas A&M 15th among all U.S. universities — public or private. That publication bases its ratings in large part on universities’ contributions to the public interest through endeavors such as service programs and research that drives economic growth. Texas A&M’s ranking is higher than any other institution in Texas.

Earlier this summer, Texas A&M fared well in ratings based on “best colleges” and “best values” assessments, including those by Princeton Review and Fiske Guide to Colleges 2012.

Still another assessment by an online magazine for college women called Her Campus Media rates Texas A&M students first in the nation in its “where school pride is a way of life” category. Texas A&M is in good company, edging out the University of Michigan and Georgia Tech for the top spot.

The review that continues to attract the most attention is one last year in which The Wall Street Journal credited Texas A&M with ranking second nationally on the basis of employers’ satisfaction in hiring graduates of institutions throughout the nation.

Taking a slightly different perspective, Southern Living rates the Bryan-College Station community among the 10 best college towns in the region that the magazine covers.

  27. As a 1965 Aerospace Engineering graduate of Texas A&M, I’m glad to see our academics especially engineering be recognized nationally. I know during my career, I benefitted from being an A&M grad both from my knowledge and the prestige of the school. Congratulations to our administrators, professors, researchers, teachers, graduates, and students for taking us to new heights. The vision of our leadership in getting and maintaining membership in the prestigous Association of American Universities is absolutely outstanding. I am now in the process of giving back by donating a Sul Ross academic scholarship. Gig ‘em !!!!!
